The Pacific Region of Colombia spans across four departments: Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Cauca, and Nariño. This region is known for its immense natural wealth, cultural diversity, and vibrant people. Comprising tropical rainforests, rivers, and coastlines, it is a land of opportunities for sustainable tourism, ecotourism, and environmental conservation.

Recognized as the second region with the highest biodiversity in the world.

In our region, we can find great environmental wealth, with a diversity of ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, paramos, wetlands, tropical forests, sub-Andean, Andean, and high Andean forests; inter-Andean valleys; and dry and subxerophytic forests.

It also harbors a wide variety of fauna and flora, especially safeguarded through the protection figures of the National Natural Parks, Regional Natural Parks, Protective Forest Reserves, and Civil Society Reserves.

This year, the Conference of the Parties - COP 16, which will take place from October 21 to November 1, 2024, in the city of Cali, Valle del Cauca, will have the participation of 196 countries. They will discuss the progress made in achieving the 23 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, focusing on topics such as strengthening financial mechanisms for nature conservation and the inclusion of society in the path toward this goal, among others.

This important event will highlight the biodiversity of our region, as it is located in the Chocó Biogeographic area, which hosts a wide variety of ecosystems, including tropical forests, mountains, and wetlands. This is one of the main reasons why the city of Cali was chosen as the central point of the Pacific region (Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Cauca, Nariño) to host the summit.

CULTURAL EVENTS

Visit Las Lajas Sanctuary in Ipiales (Nariño), which is admired for its imposing architecture and its history. Enjoy the cultural tour and, also, get to know the museum that houses important pieces of the sanctuary and behold the beautiful landscape that surrounds this majestic temple.

Be captivated by one of the most traditional religious festivals in the country, Holy Week in Popayán (Cauca) declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Discover the landmarks of the White City and enjoy its colonial architecture and gastronomy.

Visit the well-known Basilica of the Lord of Miracles in Buga (Valle del Cauca), also experience the history of its believers and be delighted by the gastronomy and landscapes of the city. Acandí town currently has the Alcides Fernandez airport, where flights operate from the Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellín city. In addition, there is also the Narciza Navas de Capurganá Airport, belonging to the town of Acandí.

If you travel by public transportation, go to Medellín bus terminal, where you can take buses to Turbo or Necoclí. Once in one of these two towns, you can take a speedboat across the Gulf of Urabá to reach Acandí. The sea route from Turbo to Acandí is 76 km (41 Nm) and from Necoclí to Acandí is 55 km (29 Nm).

If you travel by car, take the via Llanos de Cuiba – Yarumal 25 to Necoclí or take the National Route 15 to Turbo. As a reference point, the distance between Medellín – Turbo is 349 km (216 mi) and Medellín - Necoclí 389 km (241 mi).

In Acandí, there are various traditional means of transport that allow people to move inside and outside the urban area.
The speedboats that travel to Capurganá depart from Acandí, every day at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Recognized for the unmissable hike in the forest trails, the passage of rivers and waterfalls until reaching the highest part of the reserve where the viewpoint from which the Darién Plug is seen. During the tour through the forest, visitors enjoy its diversity of flora and fauna such as the white-headed monkeys, macaws, and toucans that are easily seen in the area.

Road to the El Cielo Nature Reserve

Cabo Tiburón Beach is a geographical feature that shapes this territory that marks the beginning of the Darién mountain range, it is said that its name is because this area was formerly infested with sharks. Its calm and crystal clear waters are ideal for snorkeling, in the surroundings, it is possible to hike on the different trails that are located while enjoying the tranquility and peace of this paradise place.

Road to Cabo Tiburón Beach

This bay located south of Acandí, is a vivid representation of the diversity that characterizes the Chocoan Caribbean: a combination of colors with beaches of dark and white sand, a sea of blue and green tones, Coral reefs shelter an endless number of colorful fish and a jungle with lush vegetation such as palms, mangroves, coal and ceiba trees, which are the habitat of striking birds such as toucans, herons, pelicans, and hummingbirds. It is an ideal place for snorkeling, diving, and ecological hikes in the middle of the jungle.

Road to the Bay of Trigana

Located south of Capurganá, Aguacate Bay has coral formations that house a wide number of species. On its shore, you can enjoy the beach of white sand and transparent waters, where it is possible to enter the forest that houses mammals such as monkeys, frogs, rodents, and birds. During the first months of the year the Hoyo Soplador is one of its must-see attractions for visitors since at this time the currents are stronger and it is possible to enjoy it better. Its cuisine is an ideal way to get to know this paradisiacal place and get closer to the local community.

Road to Aguacate Bay

Built in 1923, it is the main center of Catholic congregation in the municipality. It stands out for its two high towers that dominate the cliff landscape with a republican architecture, where an effigy of the Virgen del Carmen, the Patron Saint of Acandí, commemorates its dedication.

Nuestra Señora Del Carmen Church

In the vicinity of the tropical rainforest of the town of Sapzurro, is this waterfall with a waterfall of approximately 10 meters, which slides down a large rock and culminates its journey forming a natural freshwater well. In its surroundings you can appreciate different species of flora such as orchids, ferns, palms and cedars, as well as fauna such as hummingbirds, frogs and howler monkeys. Visitors are invited to contribute to the conservation of the sector and its ecosystem, returning all the elements and products that they take with them on the hike.

Road to La Diana Waterfall

This reserve, located in the village of Capurganá, municipality of Acandí, is a group of shallow wells, 5 of them freshwater and one saltwater, the latter originating from the rock formations that characterize the area, which together with the waves of the sea permanently create a natural pool of crystalline waters, also known as "the pool of the gods''. Access to the reserve begins with a 40-minute, medium-difficulty trail along the seashore. It also has a protected forest area, reserved for conservation, which is home to native fauna such as the camouflaged frog.

In El Aguacate Bay is also Soledad Beach, which is accessed by a wooden bridge that crosses the mangrove. White and golden sand beach, the water is crystal clear and shallow, full of corals that allow you to snorkel and observe colorful fish, rays, and the few hawksbill turtles. In 2009 the reality show El Desafío was filmed on this beach.

This beach is characterized by its calm waters and fine sand that turns gray when it receives the Tolo River at its mouth. It is also the gateway to the Acandí Playón and Playona Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, a protected area for the conservation of Hawksbill and Caná sea turtles, the latter being the largest in the world. These endangered species are one of the most outstanding of the Colombian Pacific and are characterized because they return to the beach where they were born to nest their own eggs; a spectacle that can be observed every year in night tours with guides and special recommendations.

La Caleta beach

The waterfall of the Batatilla River flows into a stony stream of crystalline waters. It is surrounded by rich vegetation characteristic of tropical rainforest in which tree species such as cedar, pink guayacan and oak stand out, thanks to which you can observe birds such as pelicans, gulls and herons, which nest in the surroundings.

Travel from the urban area of Arboleda to the Hermitage of Santa María Magdalena to learn about its architecture, history, visit the temple, listen to the friars and have a spiritual experience, and then visit the Berruecos Parish Complex to admire its architectural beauty with stone art.

Reconnaissance route along the Juanambú canyon where you can visit the Socorro bridge, Los Arcos bridge and the Rojas Pinilla bridge or Juanambú bridge, the main scenes where the liberating battles took place and a tour of the archaeological zone where the petroglyphs are found, ending with a visit to the Casa Manyoy museum.

Beauty and Mysticism in La Ermita

Story Between Stones

The nearest airport to town is the Antonio Nariño National Airport in Chachagüí, an air terminal serving the city of Pasto, at a distance of 60 km (37 mi) from Arboleda.

Arboleda is a town of medium complexity access, so public transportation is limited and its main road has a length of approximately 16 km (10 mi) in open road.

If you travel by public transportation, it must be done at a specific schedule set by the bus terminal. If you are in the city of Pasto, you should take a bus to northern towns such as La Unión or La Cruz which can take you to El Empate small village or to Rosa Florida small village. After that, you may take a car or motorcycle to Arboleda – Berruecos or you can also head towards Buesaco and from there look for a public or private (informal) transportation that leads you to Arboleda.

If travelling by car, take the Pan-American Highway to Pasto to Daza and turn on the old road to the north until you get to El Empate small village – Arboleda. As a reference point, the distance between Pasto – Arboleda is 39 km (24 mi), Cali – Arboleda 421 km (261 mi), Popayán – Arboleda 281 km (174 mi) and Quibdó – Arboleda 835 km (518 mi).

In Arboleda, there are various traditional means of transport that allow people to move inside and outside the urban area.

This temple that welcomes the summer district of Rosa Florida Sur (known for its spas and places of rest), bears the name of Beato Juan Pablo II Parish, in honor of said pope, remodeled in 2017 going from being a small chapel to a more modern temple, preserving its simplicity and the central nave that characterize it. It is a place visited by parishioners of the Catholic faith and devotees of the pope.

John Paul II Chapel

Small altar built in honor of Saint Ezequiel Moreno Díaz, who in life was a Spanish priest with great political-religious influence in Colombia during the Thousand Days War (1899-1902). Sanctified in 1992 by the Pope John Paul II for the miracles performed after his death, especially cures of cancer patients.The image carved in stone located in this grotto is due, according to local history, to the religious passing through here to drink water from the fountain, the which since then always remains full and used by believers for cures. In August for its festivity, Eucharists are celebrated in this place.

Road to the Grotto of Ezequiel Moreno

Waterfall named in honor of the Virgin Our Lady of Lourdes, which, according to locals and Catholic beliefs, used to appear next to the Quebrada Mazamorras, where the waters of this fountain flow. This small sanctuary built In homage to the Virgin, it also highlights the archaeological importance of the municipality through the pre-Hispanic zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figures that decorate the road, which also recalls the meaning of Berruecos site full of rocks

Lourdes Waterfall

In the village of El Empate, known for being an obligatory stopping point on the road to the northern municipalities of Nariño, the Orange and Tangerine Fair has been held since 2016, a space to make visible the production of these fruits. The fair takes place during the first weekend of August in which recreational and sports activities are carried out. In addition, the consumption of these fruits is promoted through the Happy Hour that consists of giving away orange drinks and tangerine to all the people who pass by the sidewalk.

Arboleda's handicrafts, a legacy of the indigenous people of the region, are characterized by the use of raw materials that grow mainly in the Andean areas of Colombia: páramo straw, fique (one of the main crops of the municipality) and the Iraca palm, for which Colombia, and especially Nariño, stands out nationally and internationally in the production of handicrafts. These natural fibers undergo long and costly preparation processes: from cutting, drying and dyeing; and then, through weaving and basket weaving techniques, such as rolled weaving, they become hats, bags, baskets, placemats, chests, fruit bowls and lamps.
